Best Practices in Challenging Behavior Management: the Functional Assessment Model
5 contact hours
Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Speaker: Dr. Heidi Olson Morgan, Ph.D.

Course approval: 075-0510-16177 (GH);  075-0511-16178 (ARF); 075-0511-16179 (RCFE). NHAP Provider #1634020-8704. Course is provider approved for 5 contact hours, BRN Provider CEP11897, BBS Provider PCE2013

The purpose of this session is to introduce you to a model of functional assessment as a best practices model for addressing challenging behaviors. This will provide you with means to identify the purpose of maladaptive or challenging behavior, and thus see a direct relationship between functional assessment findings and a logical intervention strategy. The field of behavior analysis first benefitted from this model in 1982, when Brian Iwata and colleagues introduced it to remediate self- injurious behavior. Since that time, functional assessment of aberrant behavior has been used to tackle a variety of challenging behaviors, but also a variety of diagnoses -- childhood behavioral disorders; mental retardation; autism and other developmental disabilities; traumatic brain injuries; and dementia, to name a few. In addition, this session will provide an introduction to skills assessment. Together, we will analyze the difference between motivational problems (such as those addressed in functional assessment) and teachable moments.

You will learn how about:

  • Three forms of functional assessment.
  • Measures used to form a strong hypothesis as to the cause of challenging behaviors.
  • The assessment-to-intervention link in addressing challenging behaviors.
  • Ways to link skills assessment findings to resident-centered objectives to manage challenging behaviors.
  • The difference between motivational problems and teachable moments in addressing challenging and maladaptive behaviors.

With the acuity of residents in long term care ever increasing, the risk of assuming responsibility for care rises multi-fold. • mutually agreed upon needs and services plan.
  • The issue of "scope of practice" in terms of meeting resident needs with in-house staff vs. collaborating with community service agencies and licensed practitioners.
  • How to identify at least 3 resident needs that require higher risk care.
  • The concepts of "best practices," "industry standards," "standard of care," and "evidence based practice" as they pertain to excellence in long term care.
  • Resources available that can serve as guidelines on optimal resident care while limiting liability.
